Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), also known as artificial insemination, is a type of fertility treatment that can help individuals or couples start a family using either the sperm of a partner or a donor.
Some individuals choose IUI because it is less invasive than other types of treatment and may involve less medication. It is also a quick procedure and should cause no more discomfort than a cervical smear test.

The IUI procedure involves placing sperm directly into the uterus. Before performing IUI, your consultant will recommend some investigations to determine whether this treatment is suitable for you.

The program includes:

  • Consultations of a reproductive specialist
  • Controlled ovarian stimulation or natural cycle monitoring
  • Intrauterine insemination procedure (single or double introduction of sperm within one menstrual cycle)
  • Patient coordination and medical support from the first contact and up to 12 week of pregnancy

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is an effective method of infertility treatment that involves the introduction of prepared sperm directly into the uterine cavity during ovulation. This procedure increases the likelihood of fertilization because it shortens the path of sperm to the egg, thereby creating optimal conditions for conception.

IUI is a less invasive and more affordable method compared to in vitro fertilization (IVF). It is recommended for couples who have difficulty conceiving naturally, as well as for women planning a pregnancy with the help of donor sperm.

Indications for IUI

The IUI method is used in the following cases:

  • Unexplained infertility, when the cause of conception difficulties remains unknown after examinations.
  • Mild sperm abnormalities, such as reduced motility or low sperm concentration.
  • Cervical mucus issues, which hinder the natural passage of sperm.
  • Erectile dysfunction or retrograde ejaculation in men.
  • Use of donor sperm for conception.
  • Unsuccessful attempts to conceive naturally for one year (for women under 35) or six months (for women over 35).

How the IUI Procedure Works

IUI is a controlled and painless process that consists of several key stages. First, there is preparation for the procedure. For this purpose, a woman’s medical examination and partner’s sperm analysis (or donor sample selection) are performed. Next, the timing of ovulation is determined using tests or ultrasound monitoring. If necessary, ovulation is stimulated to increase the chances of success. The insemination process itself takes place after the sperm is obtained, processed and purified in the laboratory to select the most active sperm. During the procedure, sperm is injected into the uterine cavity using a thin catheter. After insemination, doctors give recommendations on lifestyle while waiting for the result, and after 10-14 days, they perform a pregnancy test.

Success Rate and Effectiveness of IUI

The success of IUI depends on various factors, including the woman’s age, sperm quality, and the condition of her reproductive system. On average, the likelihood of pregnancy after a single IUI cycle is 10–20%, while multiple attempts can increase the success rate to 50–60%.
