PICSI method

PICSI method: precision in selecting the best sperm cell

When it comes to IVF, every cell matters. Sometimes, even microscopic differences between sperm cells can determine the success of a program. The PICSI method (Physiological ICSI) is an innovative technique that helps embryologists select the most mature and healthy sperm cell for fertilization. At Alternatyva Clinic, we apply this approach in complex or repeated cases, as well as to increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy.

What is the PICSI method?

The standard ICSI procedure (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) involves injecting a single sperm directly into the egg. However, even with a normal semen analysis, it’s not always possible to determine the genetic quality of sperm. The PICSI method allows for a more physiological and natural selection: sperm cells are placed in a special medium containing hyaluronic acid. Only mature sperm capable of normal fertilization bind to this substance. These are then chosen for fertilization.

PICSI: indications, advantages, and how it works

This technology is not required in every case, but it significantly improves IVF outcomes in the following situations:

  • poor sperm morphology indicators;
  • high DNA fragmentation levels;
  • previous failed IVF attempts;
  • history of early miscarriages;
  • suspected immunological or genetic incompatibility.

Key advantages of the PICSI method include:

  • reduced risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo;
  • increased chances of implantation and healthy pregnancy development;
  • greater control over the quality of the biological material;
  • suitable when using donor sperm (based on medical indications).

The process is straightforward and follows this algorithm:

  1. Semen collection (either own or donor sperm, depending on the program).
  2. Contact with a special medium containing hyaluronic acid.
  3. Selection of mature sperm that show binding.
  4. Injection of the selected sperm into the egg (ICSI).
  5. Embryo cultivation and transfer to the uterus.
